About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FSV Mainz 05 played out a 1-1 draw in their Bundesliga clash on Saturday, 28 February 2026. The result was a fair reflection of a tightly contested match, although Leverkusen might feel they missed an opportunity to capitalize on home advantage. Pre-match expectations had Leverkusen as slight favorites, given their higher league standing and recent form. The match saw its first breakthrough in the 67th minute when Sheraldo Becker (GAP -2.2%) put Mainz ahead, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Leverkusen. Becker's goal was a testament to Mainz's resilience and ability to exploit counter-attacking opportunities. However, Leverkusen responded late in the game, with Jarell Quansah (GAP +0.6%) equalizing in the 88th minute, ensuring the home side salvaged a point. Tactically, Leverkusen's manager made several changes during the match, bringing on Ibrahim Maza, Aleix García, Martin Terrier, Axel Tape, and Christian Kofane to inject fresh energy into the team. These substitutions were crucial in maintaining pressure on Mainz, ultimately leading to Quansah's late equalizer. Mainz's head coach also made strategic changes, introducing Danny da Costa, Silas Katompa Mvumpa, and Lennard Maloney to bolster their defensive setup. Key players for Leverkusen included Alex Grimaldo (GAP +5.4%) and Edmond Tapsoba (GAP +4.9%), who were instrumental in both defense and attack. For Mainz, Dominik Kohr (GAP +4.5%) and Stefan Posch (GAP +2.0%) stood out, with Kohr's midfield presence being particularly influential. This draw leaves Leverkusen in a position where they need to consolidate their form to push for European qualification spots, while Mainz will be satisfied with a point that helps them in their quest to move up the table. Both teams will look to build on this performance in their upcoming fixtures.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
